The word Meghalaya means 'bunch of clouds'. When we break the word in two separate words according to the Hindi language, we find that ‘Megh’ which means clouds and ‘Alaya' ‘which means Group or bunch’.
Another reason behind this name is that the state is situated close to the Himalayas. The Cherrapunjee in Meghalaya is known as the “wettest spot on the planet” as this place receives the heaviest rainfall.
