the standard meridian of india at mirzapur at 82'3 e was taken as the standard meridian because it divides the country into closely 2 equal parts { western most longitude=68'7, 82'3-68'7= 14 (aprox) ,easternmost meridian= 97'25-82'3=14 (aprox)}

the local time which lie on different meridian are bound to different.the sun risea two hours earlier in arunachal Pradesh as compared to gujarat this causes a time lag of two hours from gujarat to A.P to avoid confusion and to have a standard time reference the time along the meridian(82.30'E) passing through mirzapur (in up)has been taken as the standard time for the whole country this is why the watches show the same time.
