why has the mother been compared to the late winter moon

Hey !!
The poet has used a smile which is natural and appropriate. Her mother's face looked pale, faded shrunk like a dead body. Similarly the late winter moon looks hazy, lacks brightness as well as strength.
So she feels that the ''wan, pale, ashen'' look on her mother's face is like the winter moon.
Good luck !!
