why has the speaker decided to learn Kannada alphabet

As the the grandmother was illiterate, in the absence of her granddaughter, she couldn't read the story in Karmaveera. She felt very dependent and helpless. In her quest to overcome her weakness of illiteracy, she decided to learn the Kannada alphabet.
