The river was treacherous because it is very unsafe to swim in that river. His mother warned him against the same. There are many people who had lost their lives and drowned in it while they were swimming.  

Douglas's mother repeatedly told him of each incident and she always kept him away from going to the deep river. Since there were many incidents, the river been referred to as treacherous deep water.
