Generally cities build near water have 2 main advantages
1)commerce -Cities near water allow for water transport which is cheaper and faster than land transportation. cities with access to water trading routes could deliever great amounts of goods for trade to other coastal areas.
2) Sustainability- water bodies like river sea etc provide food and other resources, which in turn helps the population of coastal cities to grow and expand faster. we can obtain oil, there are oil refineries. Kochi on South west coast of India is known as "Queen of Arabian Sea" as it was an important trade centre for spices on western coast of India from 14th century.
