Why have the sparrows refused to eat the crumbs of the bread on the death of the authors grandmother?

After moving in the town, the sparrows were the only non-human beings to which the grandmother was very attached to. She used to feed them daily with the bread crumbs. After the death of the grandmother, when her dead body was lying, the sparrows came to meet her in a very silent way. They were not chirping and they even refused to eat any crumbs offered to them. It seemed as if they were giving their silent regards to her.
