Hydrogen chloride is acidic whereas quick lime is basic, so they will react with each other hence quick lime can not be used to dry hydrogen chloride.

HCl gas cannot be dried by using dehydrating agent like P2O5, CaO because P2O5, CaO are basic in nature.

Explanation:

Hydrogen chloride

  • It is acidic and quick lime is basic, so the acid and base react each other.
  • CaO and P2O5 are basic, so HCl will react with them and formed as water and salt.

Phosphorus pentoxide

  • It is a chemical compound of molecular formula P4O10 and P2O5 is the empirical formula.
  • Anhydrous phosphoric acid of crystalline solid is white in color. It is a dehydrating agent.

Calcium oxide

  • It is a basic drying agent. It is possible for dehydrating basic gases and neutral, low-boiling alcohols, amines, and ethers.
