HCl is not right by common drying agents like P2O5 or CaO because -

• The HCl is highly reactive chemical compound and it easily reacts with the chemical compounds like the phosphorus pentoxide or the calcium oxide.

• When the HCl reacts with phosphorus pentoxide,the metaphosphoric acid and phosphoryl chloride are generated.

P2O5 + HCl ---> HPO3 + POCl3.

• When the HCl reacts with calcium oxide,the calcium chloride salt and water are produced.

CaO + HCl ---> CaCl2 + H2O

• So,if we use either P2O5 or CaO,the main substance HCl will be converted into something else. That's why P2O5 or CaO are not used.
