HCL stand for hydrochloric acid
makes the food acidic
kills the germs
and also help in the activation of many enzymes for digestion
our stomach is protected from HCL by earlier known as mucus.

HCL is released from the oxyntic cells of stomach.Its work it to break the food as well as activate the digestive enzymes so that they can do their works of food digestion.
like Pepsin,Renin and lipase all these are functional only in acidic medium.
Also in acidic medium many microorganisms dies in stomach if entered.
