The statement tells us that when author,saw both the boys working hard day and night and one day asked Nicola that they earned quite good but never spend on their clothes and food,usually they eat black bread and figs and also didn't spend much on clothes.So,author said , might be you are saving to emigrate to America. But Nicola answered that "We would greatly like to go to state but at present we have other plans".Then Author asked,"What plans?"Nicola coloured deeply under his sunburn,then grew plane ,with and effort spoke sideways and said "Just plans sir".
It means that Nicola was selfless and they don't want to disclose their personal problems with others,they were self respected,don't want anybody's help.They were dignified.
