The atria are relatively low pressure, less-muscled collection areas for blood returning to the heart. The ventricles are highly-muscled pumps for driving the collected blood through the entire body, or the lungs, respectively.

It separates oxygenated from non-oxygenated blood so only oxygenated blood is sent to muscles. .......
