At the end of Second world war , Kohl found himself wandering on  the roads of a devastated Germany. Walking on foot with released prisoners and allied columns he finally made it to Ludwigshafen, his birthplace on the banks of the Rhein.  It was completly destroyed. He would never forget the horrors of war. He lived under incessant bombings and fear . During nights, he had to dig under the ruins of homes, to rescue survivors, to dig out bodies. He constantly had to deal with the trauma of war .
