Hydrogen is the first element of the modern as well as in Mendeleeve's periodic table. It lies on group A1 of period 1. There is confusion regarding the position of hydrogen because, it is dual in nature. It follows the characteristics of the alkali metals as well as of halogens. Alike the alkali metals it has only one electron in its valence shell, reduces oxygen from its compound, by reacting with other elements forms cation. Again alike halogens its position is just next t the nearest noble gas, it forms anion too by reacting with other elements. Again sometimes it doesn't show any reduction like the halogens. So,there is confusion regarding the place of the hydrogen in the periodic table.

Answer:

Hydrogen resembles both alkali metals and halogens. It can lose one electron like alkali metals and also gain one electron like halogens. ... Therefore, position assigned to hydrogen in the periodic table is considered anomalous.
