HgCl₂ is colorless while HgI₂ is colored because of the following reason:

  • Any chemical substance's color is determined by its polarising, charge transfer, and color absorption abilities.
  • Due to its high polarisability and charge to the metal, charge transfer process, Mercuric Iodide absorbs a red hue from visible light.
  • Mercuric Chloride has low polarisability, hence it doesn't absorb color from the visible spectrum.
  • Mercuric chloride, on the other hand, is a colorless chemical, but mercuric iodide is a colorful one.
