Sometimes the oxygen level at the bottom of ponds drops so low that "winter kills" of frogs result. Amphibian bodies when they hibernate do continue to burn energy, but their metabolic rates -- the rates at which they burn energy -- slow down so much that they don't burn much.

hybernation is important because amphibians are cold blooded and to maintain their body temperature they go on hybernation.
