High vacuum is required to prevent scattering of electron beam with the available contaminants and air molecules present (if any) in themicroscope column. High vacuum is essential if the electron guns provided are field emission type rather than thermionic emission type.

since electrons are very small and easily defected by hydrocarbons or gas molecules. It is necessary that to use the electron beam in vacuum environment.
