The Holika Dahan symbolizes the victory of truth over falsehood. According to the Puranas, the demon Hiranyakashipu had a boy named Prahlad. He was absorbed in shri hari devotion. Hiranyakashyap was a demon so he did not like this. He made several attempts to kill Prahlad, one of which was that he invited his sister Holika to kill Prahlad. Holika had such power that she could not burn. So Holika and Prahlad were seated on a wooden load. And a load of wood was burned. But instead of burning Prahlad with the maya of Sri Hari Vishnu, Holika was burnt. Holi is celebrated in remembrance of this very event
