Answer:

Explanation:

Hey there!

The Mahalwari System was a system of land revenue collection which was imposed by the Company during the 1830's. As land was an extremely important source of deriving capital and generated a lot of economy for the British, they devised various methods of collection which would best meet their interests.

This system, in particular, was established in those regions where land happened to be extremely fertile. This system, just like the Permanent Settlement Act, consisted of landlords who claimed control over an entire village or even group of villages and his duty was to collect revenue from all the households that came under his control and hand over a part of it to the Company and keep a bit to himself. The state demand was initially fixed at 66% and the Settlement was made for 30 years. In 1855, the state demand was revised and made 50%.

Under this system, not only the land of all the villages but even the forestland and pasture was assessed and revenue was taken accordingly.

CONS

  • The system did not take natural calamities intro consideration and led to debt and crop failure.
  • The system was supposed to be revised every 30 years but the period was not appropriate for the soldiers.

Hope this answers your question! :) Thank you.
