The series consists of members of same family with similar physical and chemical properties, therefore, called homologous series

(i) CH3OH, and (ii) CH3CH2OH are two consecutive members of homologous series.

Alkyl group —CH3 and —CH3CH2 part determines physical properties. Functional group —OH determines chemical properties of the compounds.

Why homologous series of carbon compounds are so called?

Ans ✔️✔️

In homologous series of carbon compounds, the same functional group dictates the properties of the compounds regardless of the length of the carbon chain. This is the reason they are known as homologous series of carbon compounds.✔️✔️✍️

For example , all alkanes have similar structures with single covalent bonds and show similar chemical properties so they are grouped together in a homologous series having formula CnH2n+2. 3. The two consecutive members of a homologous series are methane CH4 and ethane C2H6 . (2)
