Homologous means to have similar structure or relation. A homologous series is a group of organic compounds having similar structures and similar chemical properties in which the successive compounds differ by -CH2 group.

The first two members of the homologous series of alcohol are as follows:

1) Methanol (CH3OH)

2) Ethanol (C2H5OH)

The alkyl group determines the physical properties while the functional group determines the chemical properties of the organic compounds
