why homologous series of carbon compounds are so called?

Because it is a series of hydrocarbons which have a difference of CH3.

Homologous series is a group of organic compounds having same chemical pro general formula, same functional group, similar chemical properties and the successive members differ by CH2 group.
Eg: CH4 and C2H6
C2H5OH and C3H7OH
