It is also natural instinct for a horse to sleep standing if they feel uncomfortable in their environment or feel unsafe. It takes a decent amount of time and energy for a horse to get up. As a precaution, they sleep with their front knees locked and supporting their back legs in case of danger so they can make a quick getaway.
