Helium is used in balloons because it is a noble gas, meaning it doesn't react with anything. It is also lighter than air, meaning that it will allow balloons to float. Hot air balloons, however, are completely different and use fire to heat up the air inside the balloons. Because hot air rises, this means that the hot air balloon will fly.
