hot wire instruments use the thermal expansion of the measuring element to indicate the current flowing through it. This thermal expansion is proportional to the temperature rise of the element, which in turn is proportional

Hot wire instrument are used to measure AC due to the following reasons :

- It works on the principle that the heating effect of the current flowing across the wire leads to increment in the sag of the wire.

- Further the wire made up of either platinum or iridium regains it's original position using the spring.

- It's an instrument which is transferable while measuring the alternating current and is isolated from the area of magnetic field.

- It's much more convenient and easy to use and works well for measuring the amount of alternating current.
