Why human males are known as heterogametic whereas human females are known as homogametic? ​

The heterogametic sex is the one in which the sex chromosomes differ. For instance, in mammals males are the heterogametic sex as they have one X and one Y chromosome, whereas females are the homogametic sex, because they have two X's.
