hunting was popular in India because the British felt that wild animals were dangerous and they needed to be killed rewards were given for killing animals such as tigers lions etc .
this resulted in them almost becoming extinct

They gave rewards for killing of tigers, wolves & other large animals. As a result, the hunting increased to such an extent that these various species became extinct. As a result, kings & British officially got engaged in these activities and earned huge rewards
