Because it's properties resemble both to that of halogens (group 17) as well as that of Alkali metals(group 1).

hydrogen cannot be placed in either group 1 or 17 because hydrogen has a property of loosing 1 electron or gaining 1 electron so if we place in 1 st group 17th group will may loose its properties of 1st group similarly if we place it in 17 th group the 1st group will properties will not resemble so that hydrogen is kept in single and special case
