In Mendeleev's Periodic table, elements are arranged in the order of atomic masses. The place of hydrogen was not specific in Mendeleev's periodic table. In modern periodic table, elements are arranged in the order of their increasing atomic no. The atomic no. of hydrogen is 1. Therefore, Hydrogen is placed in Group 1.
