Hey there,

the position of hydrogen in the periodic table is just as debatable as it's chemistry.
It mostly forms compounds with a positive charge just like metals (although hydrogen forms covalent bonds) , while it is also seen in metal hydrides carrying a negative charge like halogens.
However, hydrogen does not have other properties of metals like high melting point, forming lattice in atomic state, and conductivity etc. It mostly resembles non metals by existing as a diatomic molecule H2.

So hydrogen is a non metal

Here is your answer

◆Hydrogen is not metal because metals are those elements who readily lose electrons to form positive ions but hydrogen accept eletrons to form negatively charged ions called anions .

◆Hydrogen is the most commmon non-metal in the universe.Hydrogen don't show the both properties of metal and non-metal that's why it not metalloids.

◆Metals are generally solid at room temperature but hydrogen in gas at room temperature that's why it is non -metal.

◆Metals are malleable and ductile but hydrogen is neither malleable nor ductile , if hammered they form powdery mass that's why hydrogen is non -metal.

◆Metals have high demsity but hydrogen have low density.

◆These all are the reasons responsible for hydrogen be a non-metal.
