Hydrogen can be used as a fuel, it's a proven technology. The problem with doing this on a large scale is that there's not enough naturally occurring hydrogen, so the hydrogen would have to be generated. One way to generate hydrogen is by electrolysis of water. Another way is by burning natural gas. Both of these methods are energy intensive. If the goal is reducing greenhouse gases, it doesn't work because it just moves the combustion from automobiles to the industrial plants. If the goal is to reduce fuel costs, it doesn't work because the cost of hydrogen generation makes automobile fuels more expensive.

hope it helps!!!
