The first element in the periodic table is hydrogen.Here are some reasons for the position of hydrogen:

It resembles alkali metals and halogens.

It has one electron in the valence shell.

Like alkali metals,H forms positive hydrogen.

It forms oxides,sulphides and halides.

It acts as reductant.

In HALOGENS,it is diatomic.

Ionisation potential value of H is much nearer to those ionisation potential values of halogens.

It is non-metal.
