We know that pressure increases with depth, which is also expressed by the following equation P = hρg So, in order to withstand increased pressure a hydrometer is made thicker at the bottom.

A hydrometer is usually made of glass, and consists of a cylindrical stem and a bulb weighted with mercury or lead shot to make it float upright.
