Answer:

It's written in "reverse order" because hydroxide is a polyatomic ion that still needs balance to be part of a compound. In most cases, when OH bonds to another ion the oxygen is the one that bonds to the other ion. Because of this it's is written as OH, so that it will be easier to tell how the molecule is bonded.

OH- VS HO-

  • The OH- ion has a negative charge on the hydrogen atom whereas HO- has a negative charge on the oxygen atom.
  • Hydroxide is alkali in nature and forms hydroxide ions on dissolution in water.
  • Hydroxide ions act as proton receiver due to the presence of a negative charge on the hydrogen atom.
  • Hydrogen receives an electron in hydroxide ion i.e. OH- whereas oxygen receives an electron in HO-.
  • In the compound OH-, the oxygen atom is bonded with the hydrogen atom by the share of two electrons between the two molecules.
