Why ice float in water ?

As it cools further and freezes into ice, it actually becomes less dense. ... Ice floats because it is about 9% less dense than liquid water. In other words, icetakes up about 9% more space than water, so a liter of ice weighs less than a liter water. The heavier waterdisplaces the lighter ice, so ice floats to the top.

ice has more open structure in which there is more intermolecular space .
due to this , volume of ice becomes more when an equal mass of water due to Greater volume the density of ice is less than water and therefore ice floats on water
