These spaces are larger as compared to the spaces present between the particles of water, giving ice a cage like structure. Thus, due t○ the empty spaces the volume of ice is greater than same mass of water. Hence, the density (mass per unit volume) of ice is less than that of water. A substance with lower density than water floats on the surface of water. Therefore, ice floats on water.
