ice is a solid, it has large number of empty spaces between its particles. These spaces are larger as compared to the spaces present between the particles of water, giving ice a cage like structure. Thus, due to the emptyspaces the volume of ice is greater than same mass of water. Hence, the density (mass per unit volume) of ice is less thanthat of water. A substance with lower density than water floats on the surface of water. Therefore, ice floats on water.
