Why ice is lighter then water

The very first thing is ice is not light than water. Both have same mass.

Ice has less density than water because:

When water is cooled from room temprature to 4*C it contracts due to temp.  decrease and it's density increases. Water has highest density at 4*C . When it is further cooled from 4*C to 0*C it starts expanding due to anamolous behavior of water. It's density decreases. It forms ice at 0*C which has less density than water so it floats on water.
