The Russian empire was increasing expanding its influence and territory southwards into Central Asia. Th British by then were well entrenched in India and feared that the Russians could invade India through the Afghan route.
At the same time, the Afghan ruler Dost Khan had lost his second capital Peshwar to the Sikh empire which was also expanding. The British sent an envoy to have talks with Dost Khan to help them stop the Russians. Dost Khan in-turn asked for British help to evict the Sikhs from Peshawar which the British did not agree.
The Bristish Governor General in India at that time learnt of the arrival of the Russian envoy to Kabul. He feared that Dost Khan might turn to the Russians for help to free Peshwar. The Russian and Afghan discussions almost materialized but failed at the last minute.
In the meantime, Russia was determine to expand southwards and hence approved the Persian empire to support them. The Perians at that time had a territorial dispute over the city of Herat which at one time belonged to Persia but Afghanistan wrested back control after a war. The British learnt about this and threated to fight the joint armies of Persia and Russia. The Russians backed out at this stage
While this was happening, the British were drawing up plans to replace Dost Khan with pro-British ruler Shuja Shah Durrani. This created lot of tension between the British and Dost Khan. Dost Khan assumed that the British were preparing an invasion but the British denied this and said they were only supporting a legitimate Afghan ruler against a foreigner.
This tripartite issue between Russia-Britain-Afghanistan was the main reason for the start of the war the Anglo-Afghan war which resulted in an Afghan invasion. Also the hide seek between Russia and Britain was referred to as the great game.
IN SHORT WORDS, the answer should be:
The British had invaded Afghanistan because they thought that The Russian Empire which was expanding its influence would enter India through tje Afghan Route. Thus they decided to bring Afghanistan under their dominance.
