Explanation:

in case of IE1 the electron is removed from neutral gaseous atom.

where as in case of IE2 the electrons is removed from unipositive cation.

M(g) +IE2-》M+(g)

M+(g) + IE2-》M+2 (g)+e-

as the electrons are removing ,the effective nuclear charge increases. hence removal of electrons becomes more difficult and requires high energy .

so IE2 is greater than IE1
