The blanket cuts down on the amount of oxygen reaching the fire so it tends to go out. Remove a component of the fire tetrahedron and the fire cannot exist (in most cases - - we’ll leave flammable metals out of this discussion). There is also a mechanical or physical factor in disruption of the physical structure of burning material, making it more difficult to sustain combustion. The main point of the blanket is removing available oxygen from equation.
The procedure should be conducted fairly vigorously and a wool blanket or commercial fire blanket works best. If not performed “enthusiastically” and the blanket is polyester or some other material that melts, you could do further harm. Whatever you do, just do it and do it quickly - - fire doesn’t wait. I hope you never have to use a blanket in this manner but if you do, best of luck.
