Because the rays never converge, a virtual image cannot be projected onto a screen. In contrast, a real image is one that is formed when the outgoing rays from a point converge at a real location.Real images can be projected onto a diffuse reflecting screen, but a screen is not necessary for the image to appear.

· A virtual image is that image which is formed when the light rays coming from an object do not actually meet, but appear to meet when produced backwards. These images cannot be obtained on the screen. The virtual image is always erect.
