why in the a2-b2 the degree is 0 why not 2​

In polynomial expressions we only consider the highest degree of the variables to be the degree of the polynomial.Normally, x,y,z are taken as variables. In a2 + b2 , a and b are considered as constants. If the equation was

2 {x}^{2}  + 3x + 5

or

a^2x^2 + b^2x

then the degree of the polynomial is 2 as the highest degree variable x2 has the power 2.
