The reason to adopt federalism in india is in the timeframe when it was adopted in india. Some of the reasons are listed below hope they might satisfy you.

The first reason was federalism has key essential features such as division of power, written constitution, supremacy of the constitution, independent judiciary and so on.

During early 20th century the democracy had given some of the worst leaders man kind has seen i.e. Hitler, Mussolini. The centralization of power in a democracy gave nightmares to the concurrent leaders world over as it might be misused by any lunatic leader who has a mass base in his country and may disturb the world peace. The power has to be divested at different levels and to different people

Being an colony of the british we had seen the functioning of govt and it's authority over it's subject the best possible way to avoid any future conflicts was to make a strict and rigid but yet dynamic constitution. The final structure any/every law has to be in accordance and compliance to the Constitution.

Like the british parliament under the monarchy the parliamentary form of govt was adopted in india with the president as the head of state unlike britain where the emperor is supreme authority, though the basic tenants of federalism is imported throughout the work from the USA, as the system prevalent in India favoured parliamentary form in both the ways as it was already in existence and it would not require any new amendments/changes to be done secondly the president is again the head of the state and may get absolute power anytime but in our system the president is the head of the state but cannot act without the consent of the cabinet. So president being the final authority is also bound to function as per the instructions provided under the Constitution

India being a vast country needed a system that may accommodate all the constituents i.e. States. In this huge multidimensional country which was only possible through federal structure. The powers divided amongst the states and the central was designed to create harmony, any encroachment beyond the limits suggested under the constitution prohibited such act. The system is such where there is always a check and balance to each other's authority and responsibilities.

Independent judiciary is another feather in the cap. In those years the independence of judiciary from the clutches of legislative/administrative was highly required. A weak judiciary couldn't facilitate the prevalence of legal rights and remedies to it's subjects where there is a need. Most of the then functioning and successful democracies were lacking in this category in some or the other way. In any society the tussle/skirmishes are a natural phenomenon where it can only be sedated through a impartial and independent judiciary
