In the Cold War, India did not join both sides because India was an active mediator, between the two opposing alliances, for stability and peace. India's strength was centered on the NAM (non-aligned movement) members' unity & their determination to stay non-aligned in spite of attempts made by the two superpowers to bring India into their alliances
Explanation:
- There were many reasons for India not wanting to join either of the two blocks . Indian wanted to uphold the nation's sovereignty & to have "independent foreign policy"
- India wanted to reduce difference between the rival alliances and hence prevented differences increasing which could have led to a "full scale war"
- Moreover, nations that had not supported the alliance had a "third option" (which included India too) that had benefited the growth of "Third World nations" at the time of the Cold War. Most of the nations who were non-aligned were least developed nations.
- The challenge they faced was be more developed economically & to life their people out of poverty. Hence, by not favouring either of the blocks they would get help from both blocks. Giving importance to economic issues and not joining either of the blocks benefited their growth at the time of the Cold War.
