At the time of independence, no party other than Congress had reach to, or could represent the entire diversity. It was to give voice to local interests that we opted for multi-party democracy, so that all could have a voice in the Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.

India has a multiparty system because it allows a variety of interest and opinions to enjoy political representation and in a vast country like India one,two or three parties cannot reflect the social and geographical diversity.
