Monsoon in India plays a very distinct role as rain distribution in various states. Some states see extremely heavy rains like Uttarakhand and some areas receive only patches of rains like Northern areas of Rajasthan. The above picture shows 2013 flash floods in Uttarakhand when thousands of people dead in just 2–3 days of rains.
Why does India have Monsoon Type of Climate?
Indian climate strongly govern by the winds of monsoon. These winds are confined to tropical lands between 20° North & 20° South.
In the India subcontinent, the Himalaya’s guide the flow of the monsoon winds bunging the whole of subcontinent under the influence of this winds.
These winds account for 75% to 90% of annual rainfall from June to September.
It is influenced by South-West monsoons, Retreating monsoon’s and North-East monsoons.
The north-east monsoon, commonly known as winter monsoon blows from land to sea, whereas south-west monsoon, known as summer monsoon blows from sea to land after crossing the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal. The south-west monsoon brings most of the rainfall during a year in the country.
