The major reason why India was named 'golden bird' was because of its abundant raw materials and availability of precious stones. Mauryan ships sailed as far as Syria , Egypt and Greeks. On this ground the ancient India was a global trade hub.
India traded in luxury goods of spices, perfumes and textiles and only sought gold in return prompting the Roman empire to fix the epithet 'Golden Sparrow' onto India. For Indians, obtaining gold meant attracting gold in return, and so they considered it an auspicious cycle for complete happiness.
