Continents are often a matter of convention, rather than a very precise definition. Usually they are defined as:
a large landmassthat's clearly demarcated by one or more geographic phenomena; for example, North America is bound by the Pacific and the Atlantic while Europe has the Urals to its east and Black Sea to it's south east separating it from Asia.
The Indian subcontinent meets both of those criteria:
It's size is 4.4 million sq-km which is in the same order of magnitude as Europe's 10.8 or Oceania's 8.5 million sq-km. Here's just India against Europe after correcting for Mercator projection.
It's clearly demarcated by Indian Ocean and it's bays in the south and a chain of continuous mountain ranges from the Himalayas in the north and northeast to the Hindu Kush in the northwest.
