Why India was known by various names at different points of time? Explains the significance of these names.

This is why India has three names: Bharat, which is officially used; India, which is how the Western world knows it; and Hindustan, which was once a Persian term for the Indo-Gangetic Plain. This third term has been hijacked since the last century to sow discord amongst the two biggest religious groups residing there.

In the 11th century, the Muslim conquerors called their Indian dominion, Hindustan. The Hindustan means the land of Hind. In some Arabic text, India is denoted by the name of Al-Hind, which literally means “the Hind”. Tianzhu is the Chinese historical name for India.

Bharatvarsha and Jambudwipa are two of the earliest names by which our country was known in ancient times. India was also known as the land of the people who lived along the river Sindhu. the Sanskrit word for Sindhu was pronounced Hindu in old Persian. and Hindu in french became inde ( pronounced an - de ) this word came into English and 'India'
